FAQ
When will the new pricing model come into effect?
The new pricing model, including free access to RealityCapture when applicable, will start with the release of RealityCapture 1.4, planned for late April, 2024. Perpetual license owners will receive twelve months of free updates from then, after which, the new pricing will come into effect for them.
What if my company grows beyond the $1 million USD annual revenue threshold?
Once your company exceeds the $1 million USD annual revenue threshold, you will need to purchase a seat subscription to continue using RealityCapture under the terms of the EULA.
I’m a game developer. Does this change apply to me?
There is no change to the Unreal Engine licensing model for game development under the EULA. Games created using Unreal Engine are subject to a royalty of 5% on lifetime gross revenue for projects that exceed $1 million USD, and the first million dollars are exempt from royalties. If you use RealityCapture but not Unreal Engine to create games, you will need to subscribe to RealityCapture only if your annual company revenue exceeds $1 million USD.
What will happen to my existing projects created prior to these changes?
PPI customers can open and continue working with their existing PPI projects using RealityCapture 1.4 without the requirement to purchase or use more credits, provided they have internet access. Nothing changes for projects created in the ENT version; these will continue to be accessible in the RealityCapture version they were created on and newer versions.
What will happen if I buy a subscription seat, but then don’t renew my subscription in the future?
You will not lose access to any of the projects you’ve created, but if you want to keep using RealityCapture, the EULA you signed does require you to buy new seats and/or renew your subscription. The exception is if your annual gross revenue has changed and you are now under the $1 million USD threshold.
What is the cancellation policy?
If you cancel your RealityCapture subscriptions within fourteen (14) days from your purchase, you’ll be entitled to receive a full refund. You will also be able to cancel the renewal of your subscription before the end of the subscription term.
I don’t qualify for the free version. Can I still trial RealityCapture for free?
Yes, a 30-day trial of Unreal Subscription, which includes RealityCapture, can be requested via the Unreal Engine product website, enabling you to evaluate it before committing to the annual subscription. If you are under the $1 million USD revenue threshold, you can simply download the free version.
I own a perpetual license to RealityCapture, do these changes still apply to me?
Your perpetual licenses are yours to keep. You’ll be able to continue using them and you are not required to accept the new EULA or purchase any seats of the new subscription offer. In addition, when we release 1.4, you will be given twelve months of free updates after which, if you choose to update to further newer versions, you’ll have the opportunity to review the EULA and decide if you wish to purchase a subscription or determine if you are entitled to free usage.
Where will RealityCapture be available for download?
RealityCapture 1.4 and later will be available for download through the Epic Games launcher and the new Epic Developer Portal. The older versions will remain available.
Will there be an offline installer available for RealityCapture?
Yes, an offline installer will be available for subscribers from the new Epic Developer Portal, facilitating distribution without the Epic Games launcher. There will be no requirement for internet access to install or run RealityCapture, other than for opening existing PPI projects. Educational institutions needing to install RealityCapture across labs can also access an offline installer by request.
How will I be able to manage multiple seats within my company?
You will be able to select who can access the seats you buy through seat management functionality within the new Epic Developer Portal, which will be available at all times. The first opportunity to distribute and manage your seats will be part of the purchasing process, and you’ll continue to have access and be able to make adjustments as your needs change.
Will I be able to assign seats to contractors outside of my organization?
Yes, you will be able to assign seats to external contractors.
Does the new subscription seat model include support?
For studios or companies purchasing more than ten Unreal Subscription seats, Epic Direct Support will be available to purchase for an additional $1,500 per seat annually. Epic Direct Support is not available for the standalone RealityCapture subscription seat.
Community-based support and learning materials will remain freely available to all users on the Epic Developer Community, which we will be enhancing as part of these changes.
The Epic Developer Community will aim to onboard, train, and assist new RealityCapture customers effectively, encouraging every member to actively participate and support each other in this evolving ecosystem.
What are the changes to the license system moving forward?
The new subscription seat model will simplify seat management by removing activation pop-ups, reactivation prompts, and verification notices.
Is the $1 million USD revenue threshold always calculated in USD?
Yes, you should use a reasonable currency conversion rate to calculate whether your company meets the $1 million USD revenue threshold.
What if my currency is other than USD and I am purchasing seats?
We support a number of other currencies and have adjusted pricing for certain geographical locations. You'll be shown the final price for your location after you start the purchase process and before you pay.
