News date: September 30, 2026
Maxon has announced a built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Cinema 4D, giving compatible AI assistants a direct connection to the application's tools. Artists can use natural-language requests for repetitive scene work while keeping the results as editable Cinema 4D data. Maxon's September 30 announcement names Claude, ChatGPT and Codex among the supported assistant options.
MCP support is available in Cinema 4D 2026.4 or later on Windows and macOS and is disabled by default.
What has changed
Maxon's examples include organizing imported objects, creating variations, setting up multipass renders and handling other procedural tasks. The local connection has an access token and controls for permitted tool groups. Python execution can be controlled separately, and connecting to other machines on the network requires an additional opt-in.
The distinction matters for production: the assistant's output stays in the scene, where an artist can inspect, adjust or undo it. Maxon presents this as supervised automation, with creative decisions remaining with the artist.
Where this could help a small studio
CG River's workflow take: start with a chore whose correct result is easy to measure. A good pilot is a copied scene containing inconsistently named product parts. Define a naming pattern, ask for an object inventory, and review the proposed hierarchy before allowing changes. Compare the result with the original rather than judging success by how quickly the assistant responds.
For motion graphics teams, another useful test is preparing variations from an approved base scene. Write down which parameters may change and which must remain fixed. This turns a broad request into an auditable production step and makes it easier for another artist to reproduce the setup.
Checks before adopting it
Keep an untouched scene backup, limit the available tools to the task, and inspect materials, render passes and object relationships afterward. A local MCP connection does not by itself establish how an external AI provider handles prompts or project information. Review that provider's data settings and your client's confidentiality requirements before using unreleased assets. Measure cleanup time as well as time saved.
